In high school Mr. Cortes participated in multiple public speaking groups and competitions. For four years he worked diligently in the forensic arts, specifically in Impromptu Speaking, Oratorical Speaking and Policy Debate. Mr. Cortes qualified to state tournaments in both Speech and Debate three years in a row, reaching Finals for Impromptu Speaking his junior year, Semi-Finals for Oratory his senior and 2nd Place and 3rd Place in Policy Debate his junior and senior year respectively. After high school, Mr. Cortes joined the Army National Guard, gaining qualifications in wired and radio communication equipment. He reached the level of sergeant and completed a tour in Iraq before exiting service in 2010. Mr. Cortes attended Idaho State University, where he study Rhetorical Studies. He achieved his Bachelors of Science in Rhetorical Studies in 2007 before returning to ISU for his teaching certificate. Suffice it to say, speech and human communication is very important to me. I look forward to sharing this passion with you. Courses Mr. Cortes Currently teaches four courses at Rigby High School: Speech : A basic introduction to human communication and public speaking. Dual Enrollment Speech : The same as basic speech, but also provides college credit. More information is available under the Speech Tab. Debate : An introduction to argumentation with an emphasis on Idaho State competitive events including Public Forum Debate, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Policy Debate and a variety of individual speaking events. Some interscholastic competitions may be required for full credit in the course. Competitive Debate : An advanced course that focuses on extending the skills learned in basic debate through intense competition.
